I was first introduced to these special burgers as a tee at a joint in Jersey.
The surprise (spoiler alert) is that instead of a typical cheeseburger, the cheese is stuffed inside the burger.
Don't tip your hand to your guests. Like a magician, let your guest have the fun of the "wow" factor when they take their first bite!
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1/2 red onion chopped
- 1/2 red onion sliced (for garnish)
- 1 lb ground beef
- Velveeta cheese: 4 half in slices
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- Tomatoes (sliced for garnish)
- Hamburger buns
- Bacon strips (optional)
Dice the 2 cloves of garlic.
Chop half the medium red onion.
Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Mush it all up, mixing well. You want the onion and garlic to be mixed "into" the meat with a nice even distribution. Add salt and pepper to the mix.
We're going to get four patties out of the meat. The meat should be relatively thin; it is important that the patties not be too thick or the cheese won't melt.
Cut four half inch pieces of Velveeta. We use Velveeta because it has a lower melting point than other cheeses. Velveeta is a cheese, right?
Put a pad of Velveeta on each patty and gently press it into the meat. This will further make the meat on the top of the patties even "thinner".
Put a patty on top of another, cheese to cheese to make our super-sized burgers. Pinch around the sides so that the burgers meld into one. We don't want any seems to be left through which our cheese might leak out. You might give them a last sprinkle of salt and pepper at this point. Place on a broiling pan and cook for about seven minutes on a side. They are even better if you can grill them.
Serve with toasted buns, slices of tomato, onion, and optional strips of bacon.
